This past weekend, we decided to take a little break from our usual routine and take a day trip up to Brasstown Bald, the highest point in Georgia. We left around 10:00 a.m. from Sandy Springs, and the drive itself was beautiful. It’s a little under two hours away, just long enough to feel like a getaway but close enough to be easy with kids.

Stopping for Lunch at Jim’s Smokin’ Que

Before we headed to the summit, we stopped for lunch at Jim’s Smokin’ Que, a BBQ spot about 20 minutes from Brasstown. The food was great!

The Line Into the Parking Lot

Once we arrived at Brasstown, we joined a pretty long line of cars waiting to get into the parking area. It was definitely a slow crawl, but manageable. Eventually we made it into the lot and headed to the gift shop to pay the entrance fee. The entrance fee is $8 for adults (16 and older) during regular hours, which includes the shuttle service. Children 15 and under enter for free.

Taking the Shuttle to the Summit

After paying the fee, we boarded the shuttle that takes visitors up to the summit. The ride is short and scenic, winding through trees until you reach the top. When we stepped off the shuttle, we found my sister and brother-in-law, who had already completed their hike up the mountain. The view from the summit is amazing!

Hiking Back Down Together

Rather than taking the shuttle back, we decided we'd all hike down together as a family. The trail is steep in some sections but very doable, even with kids as long as you take your time. It took us about 20 minutes total.

It was a peaceful walk. Shaded, quiet, and a perfect way to end the visit.

Final Thoughts

Our day trip to Brasstown Bald was exactly what we needed: fresh air, family time, good food, and a break from our normal routine. If you’re anywhere near Atlanta or North Georgia, this is an easy and beautiful getaway that doesn’t require much planning.

Helpful Tips for Families Visiting Brasstown Bald

1. Arrive early if possible.

The line into the parking lot can get long, especially on weekends. Earlier in the day = shorter wait.

2. Bring a toddler portable potty.

We are in the middle of potty training our toddler and there were stretches of this trip where a bathroom was no where in sight. Having a portable toddler potty was a life saver! Click here for the compact and convenient potty we used.

3. Use the shuttle with young kids.

The summit hike up is steep. Great for adults, but a challenge for toddlers.

4. Don’t skip the gift shop restrooms.

They’re right where you buy shuttle tickets, and it’s better to stop before heading up.

5. Check the weather before you go.

Cloudy days can block the view, but clear days are breathtaking.
